Day Trips to Glendalough

incorporating Glenmacnass & The Sally Gap

Glendalough
A spectacular tour of the Monastic City and the Upper and Lower lakes at Glendalough, located in the heart of the Wicklow National Park. Glendalough is famous for it’s Round Tower and Celtic Crosses.

Our tour gives you plenty of free time to explore the valley and to enjoy a walk between the lakes.  Why not visit the Interpretive Centre, where you can view a short film which tells the story of monastic settlements in Ireland, and view the artifacts in the Exhibition Room, including a superb model of what the Monastic City in Glendalough was like in the 6th Century?

Glenmacnass Waterfall
When we leave Glendalough, we head up the Military Road towards the Sally Gap. On the way, we come to Glenmacnass Waterfall, located at Mullaghcleevaun mountain (848m/2,781 ft.).  The valley below is a glacial gem, with a traditional sheep farm nestled between the sheer mountain sides of the valley.

Sally Gap & Lough Tay
We continue on to the Sally Gap, turning right toward the village of Roundwood, the highest village in Ireland. On the way, we stop at Lough Tay, where we have a bird’s eye view of the lake and the Guinness Estate, owned by the Guinness family.  Many famous people have stayed here, including Michael Jackson, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, to name but a few. Take a deep breath of the Wicklow Mountain air, and enjoy the wild and majestic scenery that surrounds you.

You will have approximately five hours to enjoy the wild beauty these parts of the Garden County have to offer. Don’t forget to bring your camera and some warm clothes!
