Gardai in Arklow have launched an investigation after the body of a badly beaten horse was discovered near Ballyrichard.
The gruesome discovery was made on Sunday in the Coillte-owned Ballymoyle woods between the Arklow Rugby Club and Scratenagh cross.
Gardai are focusing their investigation on determining the cause of death of the animal.
A walker who made the discovery told the Irish Times that there were “pools of blood everywhere” and the horse “looked like it had been beaten to death.”
“I went in to see the scene and it was absolutely horrendous,” the walker told the paper. “It’s one of the worst sights I’ve ever seen involving man or animal. It had injuries to its mouth, legs, and nose. There was blood splattered on it and there were bloodstains over a wide area of this clearing in the wood.”
According to locals, a number of horses have been spotted roaming the area in recent months having been apparently abandoned in the woods.
This is the second dead horse discovered this week. On Monday, the body of an emaciated horse was found in Wicklow town near the Broad Lough View estate.
