A fire has occurred at the abandoned AO Smith factory in Bray this evening.
Two units of the fire service along with the Gardaí were called to deal with the fire which broke out earlier this afternoon.
The Boghall Road premises closed down in 2005 and has been a hotbed of antisocial behaviour since then.
The building has also been used as a site for illegal dumping and it was this stockpile of rubbish that was set alight.
Sinn Féin’s Oliver O’Brien has called on the council to hold the owners of the derelict premises to account so that necessary safety works are carried out.
“This building needs to be immediately entered on the Derelict Sites Register to force the hand of the owners, who are based in Galway,” O’Brien said.
“There are demands now from the community in Ballywaltrim to have the old factory demolished and I echo those demands. Not only is the building and its grounds an eyesore, it’s an accident waiting to happen.
“Not far from this site two young boys lost their lives in a derelict house, so the community in the area know the dangers buildings like this pose. Action needs to be taken before it’s too late.”
