Wicklow ladies compete for international tennis cup

Wicklow residents, Yvonne Doyle of Avoca and Amy Bowtell of Greystones are part of this year’s Irish Ladies Fed Cup team which competes in Tallinn, Estonia today.

Yvonne is a former Irish number one tennis player and captains the team.

Amy heads up the Irish team this year as the current Irish number one. Joining Amy on the team are players Rachael Dillon, Jane Fennelly and Julie Byrne.

There will be 13 nations competing in this year’s Fed Cup competition, which is the ladies equivalent of the Davis Cup. The Irish are looking to gain promotion to Group II of the Euro/African Zone.

Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, who recently got engaged to Rory McIlroy, was also in the Irish group with her side Denmark, but has since pulled out of the tournament.

Also in the field is Kaia Kanepi, former world number 15 and Wimbledon quarter-finalist, who is the top player on the Estonian team.

The opposition will be formiddable but Yvonne Doyle of Arklow Lawn Tennis Club and Gorey Tennis Club hopes her youthful Irish team can go all the way and gain promotion.
