Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has resigned from his office following the whistle-blowing controversy.
Callinan had been under increasing pressure in recent days to issue an apology following comments he made at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting where he referred to the actions of the whistle-blowers as ‘disgusting’.
He had been under increasing pressure to withdraw his remarks from the record and the issue has being causing increased tension among Fine Gael and Labour.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed this morning that Mr Callanan is to step down “with immediate effect”.
His decision was relayed to the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter earlier this morning.
