Greystones Strategy Group update

Despite the weather on Wednesday 2nd, a huge crowd came to the public meeting in Charlesland Golf Club to hear from the Greystones Enterprise Strategy Team on their progress to date.

Following months of discussions, public and business meetings, focus group meetings, workshops and other forums the team gave an outline of their work to date and the key themes they will be will be working on going forward.

The three key themes identified were (1) Sports and Lifestyle (2) Creative Enterprise and (3) Local Landscape.  Stephen Donnelly gave a detailed presentation on all aspects of the themes and outlined the importance that each theme could only work with the input of the community, key stakeholders both nationally (e.g. IDA, Failte Ireland) and locally (e.g. Wicklow County Council). To date there has been excellent buy-in from everyone.

Jennifer Whitmore gave a presentation on a proposed innovative enterprise hub and park on the IDA lands on Mill Road.  Gráinne McLaughlin then gave a presentation on the proposed community-led design statement for the town that will incorporate all three themes.  The evening concluded with presentations on Burnaby Park by the Chairman of the Tidy Towns, Colum O’Broin and the strategy brochure from Gary Berney, President of the Greystones Chamber.

“The Greystones Strategy is now a viable reality and its success is, and will be based on the input from all sectors of the community.  This is a nonpolitical group that welcomes everyone’s views.  We need people in the community to come forward now and offer their support, time and expertise to bring the various themes together,” said the chamber president, Gary Berney.

“There is lots of great stuff happening, but there are multiple stakeholders and no coordination or cohesive vision.  This strategy will give Greystones a viable implementation plan that will be our constitution for the next 10-15 years. Feedback received on the night was excellent and there was a real sense of positivity and can-do attitude from across the community who attended the meeting.”

The Greystones strategy is a small, focused team consisting of Stephen Donnelly TD, Cllr Gráinne Mc Loughlin, Jennifer Whitmore – local election candidate, Gary Berney, Kyle O’Connell and Kevin Fitzgerald from Greystones Chamber and Colum O’Broin from the Greystones Tidy Towns.
