It was a memorable day for Wicklow’s Pierce Sweeney yesterday as he captained Reading to a historic win in the inaugural U21 Premier League Cup over Manchester City at the Madejski Stadium.
Reading beat City 2-0 thanks to a stunning second half performance, to secure a 4-3 aggregate victory, that capped what has been a successful season of academy football at the Madejski.
The 18-year-old moved to Reading two seasons ago after a stellar season with Bray Wanderers and since then he has created a big impression with the Royals.
Sweeney has stood out this season with some assured performances at centre back and many pundits have been impressed with his ability to read the game and he has been tipped to become a star of the game.
He has been capped for Ireland at Schoolboy level, U15′s and he was part of the U17 squad that took part in the 2011 Uefa European Under-17 Championship qualifiers. Sweeney began his career with Ardmore Rovers.
