Carnew has been hit harder by the recession than any other town in County Wicklow, according to a new report by Teagasc.
Teagasc looked at 302 towns and rural districts with populations of more than 1,500 and ranked them in terms of their unemployment rate and level of migration.
Their research found that Kilcoole is the town coping best with the recession, ranked sixth overall. Kilcoole is the only town in Wicklow in the top 100. Enniskerry is the next best performer, sitting in 107th place.
Aughrim, Carnew and Arklow have been worst hit by unemployment, while Bray, Kilmacanogue and Greystones have seen the highest levels of emigration.
Nationally, Bearna, Co Galway, is the town coping best with the recession, while Bunclody-Carrickduff, on the Wexford-Carlow border, fares worst.
Sligo and Cork were the best performing counties, with Offaly and Carlow performing worst overall.
