Thieves target Wicklow sports clubs

Gardai have issued a warning to all sports clubs throughout the county following a spate of robberies during games and training.

Last Wednesday thieves struck at Newtown GAA club taking a new lawnmower, strimmer and items used for training.

On Monday night thieves broke into cars of players while they were training at Bray Emmets ground at Old Connaught. Cars had their windows smashed in and several items were taken. CCTV is currently being reviewed by Gardai.

Last year Rathnew AFC had cars broken into twice while clubs used the indoor training facilities at the Merrymeeting.

The robberies come in the same week hurling legend D.J Carey hit out at “scumbag” thieves following the robbery of his brother’s car while they trained in Gowran, Co Kilkenny.

Clubs are being advised to use a watchman during games and training.
