Bray resident facing 5 year jail term over illegal cigarette charge

A foreign national living in Wicklow is facing up five years in jail or a fine of over 126-thousand euro after pleading guilty to illegally delivering more than half a million cigarettes to a north Wicklow estate.

Romanian man Vladislav Secrii – with an address at Iona, Old Connaught Avenue Bray – pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to delivery of 606,500 cigarettes without a tax stamp at Cois Cairn estate in Bray on June 26, 2012.

Customs officer Kevin Murtagh said that colleagues discovered the cigarettes in three pallets marked “car accessories” on airfreight cargo from Greece. The judge has put the matter back for one week to determine Secrii’s financial position.
