Wicklow bowed out of the Leinster Minor Football Championship after a 12 point beating at the hands of Westmeath in Aughrim last night.
The fact that the visitors kicked 14 wides and still went in with a commanding half-time lead tells the story of this playoff 2A contest.
Westmeath led by a point to no score after ten minutes and by this stage they had kicked eight wides.
The only goal of the first-half came from Westmeath’s Ruairi Cunningham but it came at a crucial stage and put clear day light between the side’s.
Wicklow did make a bright start to the second half and a goal and a point from Gary Allen and a Mikey O’Connor reduced Westmeath’s lead to six.
However that was as good as it got for the home side and another Ciaran Shanley goal had Tommy Carr’s men on their way to another quarter-final.
Next up for Westmeath is a quarter final clash with Offaly.
