Cllr Irene Winters has said this week that she fully supports the proposal by the ALONE housing agency calling for local authorities to release public authority houses to them and other agencies for repair and re-let.
The Fine Gael Councillor said, “I am well aware that the County Councils do not have the budget to repair the boarded up properties in their control. However, I am also aware that there are many older people in the community that are on the housing waiting lists who would benefit greatly from this proposal with regard to apartments and houses.”
Cllr Winters said she has been a supporter and admirer of ALONE in the past and has found them to be a very progressive and competent organisation. She said their recent report shows increasing numbers of older people are finding themselves with nowhere to call home as a result of a number of factors including a lack of single person accommodation, and rising rent prices. She feels this initiative could be a way of combating such trauma to the elderly.
Cllr Winters concluded by saying, “ ALONE are inviting every local Government candidate to sign their online petition and pledge their support to ALONE’s Housing Campaign ahead of the local elections on May 23rd. I have signed this petition and I would always have signed regardless of the election as I am a firm believer in the right of everyone to have a place to call their home. I also believe we have a duty to our elderly citizens in particular whose prudence in the past allowed us to develop as a country before the few short years of ‘the boom’. The economic crash and subsequent necessary but essential cutbacks to Council budgets has meant that the funding is not there to repair and re-let such houses. However I believe if the Councils are serious about reducing their housing lists then the ALONE proposal has to be given serious consideration.”
