Thanks to all the parents who came out to cheer on their boys and girls all week and fair play to Noel Keohane who marked out the pitches, our referees from our U16 squad and to the clubs county players Aine O’Reilly and Stephanie Martin who presented medals. Special mention to Father Liam Dunne, our Club President who was in attendance and who celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination recently.

AGB U10 girls took on Ballygarret in their first Wexford League match on Tuesday 17th June and emerged victorious on a score line of 2-5 to 1-3 in a great game of football. The girls put in a strong gutsy performance throughout the 40 minutes of play. Jodie Weldon stood strong in goals, cleared her lines and sent out good strong kicks finding her team mates. Aine Ni Choncuir led the defence with a determined performance, ably assisted by Caoimhe Hudson, Jessica Mellon and Elizabeth Bourke. The girls were quick off their mark and were good to judge play – getting out in front thwarting each attack and giving the Ballygarret forwards very little time on the ball. Tegan Doyle, Grainne Flynn and Susie Murphy worked tirelessly at midfield covering a huge amount of ground supporting both the backs and their forward team mates. As the game progressed they started to use the ball more wisely which saw some great combinations of kicking and hand-passing, resulting in some fine scores for AGB. The forward line of Ciara Kennedy, Emma Nolan, Grace Furlong and Triona Crowley put Ballygarret girls under a lot of pressure. Furlong had opened the scoring with a goal after an inch perfect pass from Aine in the first half. Ciara, Aine and Triona both scored a point a piece which saw the sides go in level at half time on a score of 1-3 to 1-3. The girls work rate and determination across the team in the second half resulted in keeping Ballygarret scoreless. AGB went on to score another goal and 2 points from the boot of Grainne Flynn.
The work rate and team play was second to none from this young side. In fact the commitment shown by one particular player whose parents drove her directly from the airport after her holidays to get to the match just before kick-off is an example for all players in all age groups across the club. It’s this type of commitment and attitude from players that makes teams great! Well done Aine. AGB are delighted to be playing in the Wexford league and are looking forward to their next match against Clone. Big thanks to all parents who travelled down to the game this evening and well done to the girls on a fantastic result. On a separate note the girls and management team would like to wish Kym Behan a speedy recovery from a broken bone she received recently playing football for her school.
The U12 Div1 girls played Tinahely on the 19th of June on a gloriously sunny evening. These two teams usually are score for score and this game wasn’t much different. AGB started off brightly with 3 points. Tinahely came back into the game and scored 1-1. Great goalkeeping by Lucy prevented additional scores late in the 1st half. The second half was dominated by AGB who were quick off the mark. Tinahely threatened briefly but the AGB defence held firm. AGB forwards and midfield lifted the pace and scored another 1-2 to leave the score 2-6 to 1-1 in favour of AGB. Great result and performance by the girls tonight who fought hard for every ball and worked very well has a team. Well done girls.
The U14 Div3 Girl’s recorded an excellent victory away against a very competitive Newtown side on the 17th of June in their League campaign. A quick start by the girls was quickly cancelled out by a well worked Newtown goal, but it wasn’t long until AGB got into their stride with some excellently worked scores to go in at half time in the lead. Nothing was taken for granted and the girls were quick to settle in the second half with some well taken scores. Newtown rallied with two goals to cut the deficit, but the girls managed to step things up another gear with some clever movement and incisive passing. The team showed great attitude tonight, working hard to support one another while displaying great courage and determination. Well done to all the girls including Abbie and Georgia from our U 12’s. Final score: AGB 6-10 Newtown 3-1.
AGB Senior Ladies took on a valiant Valleymount side in the final of the Cup Competition in a sunny Blessington on the 21st of June. The game was played at a fast pace in very warm conditions. Arklow’s performance was below par in the opening half with Valleymount appearing to be the hungrier side. The teams were level at the break 4-3 to 3-6. Eleven minutes into the second half disaster struck for AGB as two of their key players, team captain, Sue Tyrrell, and stalwart Caitriona Byrne collided and suffered head injuries. AGB lifted their game and Steph Martin gave them a five point lead with a super goal, their fifth of the match. Valleymount refused to surrender and piled on the pressure to come within two points of the holders in what was a very sporting and skilful encounter. This was a day when the youngsters shone with great displays from Niamh Arthur, Katie Larkin, Ciara Forde, Annie Conroy and Aine O’Reilly from AGB. Rachael Byrne stepped up to the mark between the posts in the absence of the regular goalkeeper. Orla Hayes and Emer Curran also acquitted themselves well in this encounter. Eimear O’Brien accepted the trophy on behalf of AGB and thanked the Valleymount side for a very challenging and sporting game. She especially thanked the First Aiders who were so quick to help when the Arklow girls were injured; reminding us that player welfare is always top of the agenda in ladies football. Well done to all the players, mentors, match officials and the host club for the great afternoon of football that was served up to the loyal supporters who attended in such great numbers. Final score: AGB 5-7 Valleymount 3-11
Well done to our club man, Ciaran Hyland, and the Wicklow county team on their win against Offaly. Roll on more Championship football!
