Arklow sewage scheme project in doubt over planning permission timeline

Gareth Farrell of East Coast F.M reports there are concerns that planning permission for the proposed Arklow sewage scheme could run out in the next few months.

The scheme has been in the pipeline for at least 21 years with the first environmental impact study carried out in 1993.

However a number of legal challenges have delayed work getting underway Last September funding of €1.12 million was approved by the Minister for the Environment, for the South Green and Harbour Road network contract, allowing Wicklow County Council to move forward with part of the project.

However in late November of 2013, the contractor, Conwell contracts, walked away from the project. Wicklow T.D. Billy Timmins says if the planning is allowed to lapse, it will put the whole project back to square one.
