Junior Football Championship Round 1 Win for AGB Ladies

AGB          2-8

Newtown 0-1

Report by Margot Hughes

AGB Junior Ladies took on Newtown in the opening round of the Junior Championship on Saturday July 5th at 7pm in Newtown.

Both teams made a determined start and both defences were kept busy in the opening minutes thwarting the efforts of the opposing forwards.

Chloe O’Reilly broke the deadlock in the 8th minute when she got on the end of an inch perfect pass from Aisling Appleby and made straight for goal, landing a cracker of a shot in the back of the Newtown net. Appleby provided the pass for O’Reilly’s next point in the 13th minute and added a second point herself in the 16th. Newtown continued to battle and scored their only point of the game in the 23rd minute.

Further scores from Chloe O’ Reilly and Sarah Kendrick left it 2-4 to 0-1 at the break and Newtown had a mountain to climb in the second half. But the Arklow side did not have it all their own way by any means. They had to battle for every ball as the Newtown ladies continued to keep the pressure on throughout the 60 minutes.

Mairead Hurley, Ger Galvin, Mary Geraghty, Aoife O’Reilly, Caoimhe Crowley and Emer Curran got no respite in the AGB backline and Amy Devereux was outstanding in the Arklow goal. Orla Hayes and Michelle Scanlon battled at midfield for the Arklow side and Newtown’s Aisling McDonald and Nicola Fitzsimons gave them plenty to do. Louise Doyle made some fine saves in the Newtown goal denying Sarah Kendrick on at least two occasions.

Róisín O’Reilly, Doirrean O’Reilly and Molly Byrne were also very strong for AGB in the forward line. Substitutes Lisa Keegan, Emily Mitchell and Claire Murray also contributed to Arklow’s victory on the day. Sadly Newtown’s Aisling McDonald was forced to leave the field of play due to an ankle injury and we wish her a speedy recovery.

The valiant effort from Newtown is not reflected in the score line but the North Wicklow side did create many chances which they failed to convert into scores. The Arklow girls looked sharper on the day. This was a great team effort by AGB but Orla Hayes fielding was exceptional and Aoife O’Reilly’s persistence in defence resulted in numerous turnovers and set up many of the Arklow counter attacks.
