On the 14th of April, 12 year old Cian MCBride traveled to Crumlin Hospital for a routine chest x ray after several antibiotics since Christmas eve for ear infections and a chest infection.
He was admitted for further tests and on Friday the 18th of April after a biopsy on a lump in his neck Cian was informed that he had Hodgkins lymphoma and that chemo would start immediately the following day.
That Friday evening Cian came to a very important and positive decision .
He knew that hair loss is part of chemo so said to his mum that cancer would not get his hair but rather he would like to shave it off for a sponsor and that any money he received it would like to give to St. John Cancer Ward and to The Heart Ward where his youngest sister had major surgery 9 years ago.
This positive attitude was embraced by all and his cousin Aisling Arthur produced a card and has organised the card to be dispersed around the community of Arklow.
Cian was to shave and all his siblings Shane, Daire, Ros, Tiernan, Una and Ciara to dye their hair and On Sunday 27 April, Kelly Fisher volunteered her services
thus “Cians Shave and Dye Campaign ” was up and running .
Arklow Rocks, Arklow United and AGB all of which Cian is a member have all come forward to help raise funds for Cian’s Shave and Dye Campaign .
Another cousin Ray O’ Brien asked that an online bank account be set up as he had oversee contacts that wanted to contribute. This is set up in Bank of Ireland Arklow and account details are as follows
67085248 sort code 906451
iban no is IE69 BOFI 90645167085248
Bic BOFI IE 2D,
While Aisling is responsible for card allocation and collection the “Cian Shave and Dye” account is set up as a joint account by Vincent Bryne Chairperson of Arklow Rocks Hurling Club and Cian’s mother Maeve McBride The account will remain open for duration of treatment and will be closed one week after Cians gets the all clear .
There will be no withdrawal until closing the account and the only way to donate to this precious cause is on a sponsor card or by donation to bank account.
Two weeks ago Cian learned that after 6 months of chemotherapy he will also receive radio therapy for a few weeks so hopefully by Christmas we will the word we need to hear”. You are cancer free ”
Michael Hayes decided he would shave his hair to support Cians Cause and he received 365 euros on his card and presented it to Cian
Cian received a further 300 from Brian Kavanagh his soccer manager and 100 euros from senior team of Arklow united on same evening. Cian McBride and his family would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of Arklow and beyond for all the support, it has been incredible.
