Dunlavin residents were shocked to learn of the sudden death of former St Kevin’s community college teacher Nellie Lonergan. Nellie died suddenly at her home in Fethard, Co. Tipperary on Saturday July 12th 2014. Nellie taught in Dunlavin for 35 years and retired 2 years ago.
While Nellie was primarily associated with teaching secretarial subjects in St. Kevin’s she was also involved in many other aspects of school life including administration, home liaison and work placement for students. She was also involved in community activities, particularly West Wicklow Athletic Club.
Since retiring Nellie married her long time friend Des Vere Hunt and had returned to her native Tipperary where she got very involved with helping Des out on the farm.
Nellie is mourned by her husband Des, daughter Elizabeth, son Conor, sisters Mary and Margaret, brothers David, Tom, Bill and Philip and many relatives and friends. Nellie’s funeral took place in Fethard on Tuesday July 15th 2014. May Nellie rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Dot Naughton who died last week after a short illness. Dot had worked in Rathsallagh House for many years. She is mourned by her husband Ted, daughter Lorraine, sons David and Mark, son in law Shane, daughters in law Tania and Laura, her grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. Dot’s funeral took place in Dunlavin on Monday July 14th 2014, a guard of honour was provided by Baltinglass and Woodenbridge Golf Clubs both of which she was a member. May Dot rest in peace.
Remembering World War One in Blessington Library 22nd July – 16th August.
The year 2014 marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, and Wicklow County Libraries and marking the centenary of the start of the first world war with an exhibition and talk by historian John Goodman on the impact of the war on County Wicklow and the men who went to the front. The National Library’s ‘Gallant Sons’ exhibition will be on display in Blessington Library from 22nd July to 16th August next, this exhibit focuses on the experience of Irish men abroad during the war as well as the stories of families who were left behind. In addition, a selection of items more specific to Wicklow will be displayed, these will include extracts from Union minutes sourced from the County Archives and letters to and from the front. The talk takes place on 29th July at 7 p.m. and the exhibition will be up until 16th of August. Free Admission and all welcome.
New Running Club
We walk / jog or run Monday / Wednesday and Friday nights at 7pm outside St.Kevins School in Dunlavin. This club is completely free. People can just turn up on the night and join people either doing a “Couch to 5K” or walk, jog or run.
We are on Facebook under “Dunlavin Running Club.”
The annual graveyard Mass will take place in Dunlavin Cemetery on August 24th at 7pm. Please let family and friends who do not live in the area know of the date.
A two day sponsored 50k walk will take place from Tiglin to Glendalough and back on July 26th and 27th 2014. Proceeds for Tiglin Addiction Centre. For further details contact John on 0872038857
