Greystones golfer secures U.K Open spot despite time-keeping error

An amateur golfer from Greystones has qualified for the upcoming U.K Open at Royal Liverpool.

Paul Dunne (21), who is studying at the University of Alabama, claimed a place in the famous tournament, after coming through the final qualifying round at Woburn yesterday.

However it was very nearly being a disaster for the Wicklow man after he misjudged the start time and just made it to the first tee with a minute to spare.

That error didn’t affect his golf however and he carded back-to-back 67s to post 10 under to secure one of the final qualifying spots.

It capped off a memorable few days for Dunne as he had been part of the victorious European Collegiate team which won the Palmer Cup against the United States opponents at Walton Heath over the weekend.

Speaking after the event he said “It has been an incredible couple of days both here and at Walton Heath and it’s something I will never forget.”
