Dunlavin residents were shocked to learn of the sudden death of former St. Kevin’s Community College teacher Nellie Lonergan. Nellie died suddenly at her home in Fethard on Saturday 12th July.
Nellie taught in St. Kevin’s for 35 years and retired 2 years ago.
Although primarily associated with teaching secretarial subjects in St. Kevin’s, Nellie was also involved in many other aspects of school life including administration, home-school liaison, Year Head and work placements for students. She was also involved in community activities, particularly West Wicklow Athletics Club.
Nellie retired from teaching in 2012 and in February of this year married her long time friend Des Vere Hunt. A native of Tipperary, Nellie moved to Fethard to continue her new life with Des.
Nellie is mourned by her husband Des, daughter Elizabeth, son Conor, sisters Mary and Margaret, brothers David, Tom, Bill and Philip and many relatives and friends.
The attendance at her funeral of teaching colleagues past and present, past pupils and parents, neighbours and friends from Dunlavin and the surrounding catchment area of the College was indicative of the esteem in which she was held by the Dunlavin community.
