Carnew notes August 18



On August 24 there is going to be a walk at Scullogue Gap near Bunclody, grade B, 12km, meeting in Tinahely at 9.30 – or Bunclody car park at 10.00. On August 31 there is going to be a coastal walk near Wicklow town (grade C), meeting in Tinahely Square at 9.30am. Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food & drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear. Full walking schedule is on the Tinahely Website.

Carnew Musical Society – Rehearsals for A Christmas Carol

Rehearsals for Carnew Musical Society’s Irish/European production of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol will commence on Tuesday the 2nd of September in Carnew National School. 

New members always welcome (over 16’s for main rehearsals) Auditions were held lately and the cast to date are as follows:  Scrooge: John Young, Fred: Gary Stevens, Christmas Present: David Cox, Belle/Narrator: Mairead Connaughton, Virginia: Catherine Stafford, Charwoman: Jennifer Byrne, Laundress: Niele Kavanagh, Gravedigger: Paul Doran, Old Joe: John Duignan, Mr. Fezziwig: Jimmy Spellacy, Mrs. Fezziwig: Joan Duignan, Mrs. Cratchit: Mandie O’Keeffe, Gentleman: Joe Sinnott. There are a number of roles still to be filled.

The popular show will be staged in St. Brigid’s Hall, Carnew from Monday 24th to Saturday 29th of November.

Carnew Camogie Notes

The U-12s had a great day at the Leinster Caman to Tullamore blitz last Saturday. That was actually the last ‘official’ outing for the U12s and they performed magnificently as always against teams from Kilkenny, Wexford, and Dublin.

 Meanwhile, the U-16s lost out to Kilcoole in the ‘B’ Championship but went on to have a resounding win against Annacurra in the Shield semi-final. The U16 Shield final will be played on September 27.

 A big congratulations to Olivia Matthews who represented Carnew on the Wicklow U-14 team at the Leinster Inter-County Blitz on Saturday, August 9 in the Sportsfield in Carnew. Over 100 girls participated, with Under 14 Development Squads taking part from  Wicklow, Kildare, Meath and Laois.

 And the U-8s and U-10s are still playing, with blitzes to come in Knockananna on August 23, Kiltegan on September 6 and Aughrim on September 20.


Lena Donohue, Coolroe would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone for their good wishes cards and gifts on the occassion of her birthday. It was very much appreciated.


Congratulations to Brian and Paula Buttle, Donishal on the birth of their daughter. To Paul and Maria Potignanuo on the birth of their daughter recently..

Carnew Heritage clubs annual working day will take place on 21st September with the usual cutting and binding, tractor pulling, music, dog show, tents, the Hillbillies will be there again this year making bread, tarts, colcannon and more.


Carnew GAA lotto was not won numbers were 3,13,17,26 lucky dips were Niamh Sinnott, Newline. Ettie Kilbride, School Height. Mick Kenny Corner House and Tina Jameson, c/o M. Molloy, the next draw was 18th August and the jackpot was €5,800, tickets only €2 from players or local shops.


A tour of Carnew Castle grounds will take place on 30/31st August from 2 – 6pm admission €3 per person or €5 per couple.

All Saints church and grave yard are open to the public wheelchair accesiable tea and coffee available in the school.


Majella and Jimmy’s strictly come dancing upcoming events are the Spin the wheel was launched on 16th August in The Corner House tickets €2 from the Corner House or The Grooming Rooms.

Children’s back to school fancy dress disco on 24th August from 4 – 7pm €5 each or €10 per family.

Win All Ireland hurling tickets draw on 4th September in The Corner house tickets €5 or 3 for €10.

Christina and Niall are holding a table quiz on this Friday 22nd August in the Lodge Carnew at 9pm. All welcome to come along.


There will be a bingo on Sunday 31st August at 3pm in St Bridgets Hall Carnew, everyone welcome to come along, proceeds towards Christina and Niall’s Strictly Come Dancing Fund. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Well done to the ladies football team who drew on Saturday in their final and we wish them the very best of luck in the replay.

John and Erica would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped in anyway with their fundraising for Strictly Come Dancing fund, their fun fox trot run/walkon Sunday last and the raffle for the heifer which was won by  Barry O’Toole Kiltegan and Ailish Doyle who won the €50 for the walk, well done to both and many many thanks to all.
