AGB : 2-10
Tinahely : 1-5
Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney U16s took on Tinahely at home on Sunday 5th October at 11.30am. The Arklow girls made a strong start scoring 2-2 in the opening eight minutes.
Goals from Annie Conroy and Chloe O’Reilly and points from Emma Furlong and Róisín O’Reilly did much to settle their team in the very heavy and slippery conditions in Pearse Park, after a heavy shower made the going tough for both teams.
Róisín O’Reilly captained the team on the day and led by example scoring a lovely point in the 9th minute to extend the Arklow lead. Tinahely had not come to Arklow to lie down however, and they put plenty of pressure on the Arklow back line.
Anna Hedderman and Aoife Gorman made life difficult for Ciara Forde at centre back and Becky Hayden in the corner back position. The girls had to work extremely hard and their pressure insured Tinahely’s early efforts went wide of the mark.
The Tinahely forward line continued to create chances and finally in the 17th minute their efforts were rewarded when Aoife Gorman rattled the Arklow net despite the Trojan efforts of Becky Hayden to put her body in the way. Annie Conroy and Orla Hayes supported their defensive line from mid-field and fed plenty of quality ball into the Arklow forwards. Róisín O’Keeffe was kept busy in the Tinahely goal as were her team mates in the back line.
Despite some great effort by Emily Hadden and her hard working fellow defenders, Róisín O’Reilly, Doireann Kavanagh, Annie Conroy and Emma Furlong added a further four points to the Arklow lead to leave the half time score 2-7 to 1-0 in favour of AGB.
Tinahely played with increased confidence in the second half and set about tackling the deficit in a very workman like fashion. Sarah Byrne pointed for them early in the half and Anna Hedderman added another three to eat into the Arklow lead. Despite creating chances at the other end Arklow were slow to register their first score of the half. Eventually Emma Furlong converted her chance and Annie Conroy added a second within a minute.
The battle for possession continued for the remainder of the game with both sides working hard but failing to convert their scoring opportunities. Aoife Gorman finished the scoring for Tinahely with a well taken point in the 25th minute and Róisín O’Reilly added Arklow’s final point in the 28th minute leaving the final score was 2-10 to 1-5 in favour of the Arklow side. AGB now go on to play the winners of the second semi-final between St. Pat’s and Bray.
The final is scheduled for October 18th.
This was a very sporting encounter with lots of hard work from the young players. Doirrean O’Reilly was very consistent in the Arklow goal and the quality of her kick outs had a bearing on the outcome of the game.
Kayleigh Earls and Kayleigh Carter were very strong in the Arklow defence as were Ciara Forde and Aoife O’Reilly.
Orla Hayes and Annie Conroy held the mid-field through sheer hard work and Róisín O’Reilly, Doireann Kavanagh and Emma Furlong covered a lot of ground on the day both attacking and defending when it was necessary.
Hannah Keogh, Orla Kealy, Róisín Murray, Anna Hedderman and Aoife Gorman were in top form for Tinahely and were great leaders for their team on the day.
