Arklow Shipping Silver Band to play World Premiere

The World Premiere of a new piece of music sponsored by the Wicklow County Arts Office and written especially for The Arklow Shipping Silver Band will take place in the beautiful surroundings of the Mermaid Arts Centre on Saturday 11th October at 8pm.

Its composer Ian Wilson was born in Belfast and has written nearly 150 works, including a range of orchestral and multi-media pieces. His compositions have been performed and broadcast on six continents, and presented at festivals including the BBC Proms, and at venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Albert and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. Wilson has in recent years also worked with jazz musicians, Asian tablas and Chinese pipa players and traditional Irish singers; he has also collaborated with choreographers, theatre directors and electroacoustic and computer music composers.

He has received many awards over the year and also held the position of director of the Sligo New Music Festival from 2003 to 2011 and from 2010 to 2013 and is Associate Composer with the Ulster Orchestra.

Not only is this piece call “Arnkell- Lag” written for the band but it is inspired by the bands hometown location of Arklow.

During the performance the audience will hear familiar sounds of the sea, the wind, a Viking Horn representing the many battles which took place on the land around the Area.

To celebrate the honour of being the band selected to have this piece written for it they will host a full concert of other popular music on the night including some up tempo swing, jazz and traditional numbers.

Joining the band also will be two local talented singers and good friends of the band, Naoimh Penston who recently hosted her successful Forget Me Not concert in the National Concert Hall with an audience of over 800, & The king of Swing himself Dermot Byrne who will feature some popular numbers by Ole Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra.

One of the Arklow Silver Bands finest hours came when they performed on the multi-million selling album “The Joshua tree” by U2.
