Rathnew 1-8 St.Pat’s 0-7
An injury time goal from Mark Doyle sealed victory for Rathnew in Aughrim this afternoon in the Coogan Steel football championship.
In a game of very few chances Rathnew just about shaded it.
Rathnew keeper Peter Dignam was the hero in the first half pulling off a point black save and also saving a Paul Earls penalty.
The Village went into the break with a three point lead 0-6 to 0-3.
In a poor second half which went from end to end without any chances for each side and two long stoppages for injuries to Nicky Mernagh and John Manley, 6 minutes were added on it was during this period the game came to life.
Pat’s got to within a point and looked like taking the game to a replay when Tommy Gill received a long pass on the stand side and quickly fisted it to Mark Doyle who still had work to do, but done it with great ability as he shook off a Pat’s defender to slide the ball low to the left of the keeper for the Rathnew goal.
Jim Coogan and County Chairman Martin Coleman present the trophy to James Stafford and Tommy Gill.
Rathnew defender John Manley was awarded Man of the Match.
