Teacher jailed for having sex with female student in UK

Two teachers were jailed for having sex with the same sixth form girl at their school.

Johnathan Egan originally from Greystones, a married English teacher, had a four-month relationship with the 17-year-old girl, which included sex in the store room, on the school grounds and at both their homes.

His colleague history teacher Matthew Wallace, from Enfield, was told about that affair by the girl only after she had gone to his home for sex, St Albans crown court heard.

Prosecutor Will Noble said Egan, the 36-year-old form teacher of the girl at a school in south east Hertfordshire, began a relationship with her last November. It started with a kiss and then moved onto sexual activity on the school premises.

After the girl went to his home Egan sent her an email that read: “It was incredible tonight: Sex, more sex, and just spending time together watching classic Cheers (the US comedy) without worrying about who is going to walk in on us.”

In March this year history teacher Wallace, 42, had sex with the girl, sending her an email afterwards saying: “I want to run my tongue over you. I would do it all again – no pressure though.”

The teachers were arrested in March this year after the girl’s friends saw her crying. They asked her what was wrong and she said she had slept with two of her teachers, said Mr Noble.

Staff at the school were informed and Egan was confronted on the football pitch where he was playing a match. The girl saw what was happening and was heard to say: “Oh no, not Johnathon. ” She was to tell the police she was in love with Egan.

Egan, the NUT rep at his school, told the police he had sex with the girl seven or eight times. He said he was over-sexualised and was receiving counselling.

Wallace, who was single and lived alone, told the officers he was flattered by the girl’s attention and was suffering from stress at the time. He said he had picked the girl up from a station, took her to his home where they had sex before he dropped her off near her home.

Egan now living in Croydon, pleaded guilty to seven charges of having sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust. He was of previous good character.

Wallace, of Ascot Gardens, Enfield, pleaded guilty to one charge of having sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust. He had no previous convictions but had been given a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly.

Stephen Powles, for Egan, said he had trained in Ireland and worked in Dublin before moving to Hertfordshire in 2011. He said: “He admits his conduct was wrong and unacceptable. He crossed the line between a teacher and pupil. It was a huge lapse of judgement.”

He said Egan wanted to apologise to the girl and her family. He said Egan and his wife of 6 years had separated, but were now trying to take steps to try to resolve the relationship.

For Wallace, Paul Kaufman said he apologised for his behaviour and was contrite, saying he “wished to turn the clock back.”

He went on: “There is no suggestion he has at any other time acted inappropriately. He was a dedicated, committed and hard-working teacher. It was an isolated incident and out of character. She was 17 and three quarters and there was one act. He picked her up and had sex at his address. Evidence suggests he did not make the first move. He succumbed in a moment of weakness. ”

He said the girl only told him about her relationship with Egan after they had sex.

Both men had their contracts ended and would never work as teachers again. Their lawyers both urged the judge to pass suspended sentences.

But Judge Michael Baker QC said: “I can’t suspend the sentence. The breach of trust was too serious.”

He sentenced Egan to 14 months and Wallace to six months’ jail on Friday. Egan must register as a sex offender for ten years and Wallace for seven years. They will be banned from working with children again.
