Intermediate Men

AGB Intermediate Men got their first league win of the year after a dogged battle in a windswept Dunbur Park on Saturday 28th. Two second half goals proved the difference as the away side pulled away and eventually ran out five point winners. The first half was a tight affair with both sides registering only one point each in the opening 15 minutes. The home side put two more on the board before Daire McBride finished a well worked goal. AGB were playing against a strong wind in the first half, making the goal all the more important as they only managed two more points in the first thirty. Two more goals in the third quarter decided the game, the first going in off one of the defenders, while full forward Healy showed the 14-year old goalkeeper no mercy in firmly dispatching the second past him. Christopher O’Brien got the score of the game soon afterwards and AGB seemed in total control. The home side fought back admirably in the final ten minutes but had too much to do and despite losing a man to a harsh red card, AGB had enough to hold on and take the two points home with them.

AGB: J.Bolger, E.Carroll, J.Tyrrell, C.Doyle, A.Byrne, D.O’Harte, I.Kelleher, M.Murphy, C.O’Brien (0-1), I.Hurley (0-2), P.Gleeson (0-1), D.O’Keeffe (0-1), D.McBride (1-2), P.Healy (1-2), J.P.Hurley, O.G. (1-0)

Senior Ladies

AGB 1 took on a very young Carnew side in the Cup competition on Sunday 29th March 2015 in Pearses’ Park. The Arklow side dominated throughout and, despite valiant efforts on the part of this developing Carnew side, the traffic was one-way for the fifty minutes supervised by Ciarán ó Sé.  The game was played thirteen-a-side so all the girls had to work hard and cover a lot of ground. Becky Bermingham, Angelika Pyciak and Katie Hawthorne gained valuable experience playing alongside the established players at AGB. Linda Dempsey, fresh from her All-Ireland Rugby Victory with Rathdrum over Old Belvedere on Saturday 28th March was in fine form in the AGB goal, despite bearing the bruises and scars of the previous day’s encounter. Carnew for their part had brave performances from Ella Doran, Eabha Barnes and Shauna Hilley, with Niamh Murphy in the goal making some fine saves, particularly in the second half, in which Carnew only conceded one goal. While this was largely a senior v junior tie Carnew will have gained valuable experience to carry them forward into the Junior Championship in which they will, no doubt, be serious challengers once again. For Arklow, who are also building on their senior squad it’s a case of a lot done but a lot more to do as they continue to integrate new members to the panel and strive to gel as a unit going forward. The final score of 7-16 to 0-2 reflects the enormity of the challenge which Carnew faced when they travelled to Arklow but full credit to them for battling to the very final whistle.

Wicklow Minor Ladies

Wicklow minors took on Louth in the third round of the Leinster Minor Championship 2015 on Saturday March 28th. Having lost the opening round to Meath and having defeated Carlow in Round 2, the girls were anxious to come away with a second win on this occasion. While Wicklow had the lion’s share of possession, Louth continued to battle and the half time score was 3-1 to 1-1 in favour of Wicklow. The Wicklow management encouraged the girls to continue to play the same game and the scores would come, for although they were making good decisions they were not converting chances into scores on the board. The scores did come in this half.  Wicklow ended up convincing winners on a score line of 4-9 to 1-3.
