Top Wicklow and Intercounty referee assaulted as he left the field of play in Hollywood yesterday

Yesterday’s IFC clash between Baltinglass and Stratford-Grangecon in Hollywood ended on a sour note after John Keenan was assaulted as he left the field of play.

The attack happened as he made his way through the crowd to get back to the dressing room. It is understood that a Stratford supporter approached him out of the blue and hit him a head butt in the nose.

Baltinglass had beaten Stratford- Grangecon by four points when the incident occurred.

John Keenan is fast becoming one of the best referees in Ireland and was announced as one of the referrees for this years All-Ireland Senior hurling championship.

The other game at the west Wicklow venue between Donard/Glen and Blessington had to be abandoned after a player received a leg injury.
