Thousands of Wicklow people came out on Friday 17th April to again support East Coast FM’s 7th annual Wicklow Wide Coffee Morning in aid of the five of the cancer support services and centre’s in County Wicklow and The Wicklow Hospice Foundation. Coffee mornings took place in eleven different venues throughout the Garden County while separate coffee mornings and other smaller coffee mornings and events were held in other parts of Wicklow.
In the 11 venues International Best-selling author Cathy Kelly was joined by former rugby international Shane Byrne, Musician Phil Coulter and TV Personality Amanda Brunker to show their support by making appearances around the county on the day. Musicians, Chris De Burgh, Eleanor McEvoy, Mary Byrne, Luan Parle, Kim Hayden, McCabe and Eurosong Winner Molly Sterling provided fantastic live performances at different venues of the event. As did; Comedian Dave Young, Magician and Mentalist Colm Dawson, Kids Magician Joe Daly and Ventriloquist, Comedian and Magician Jack Wise.
Extra events were also held across the County on Saturday and Sunday including multiple bag packs and a Monster Table Quiz. This year; more Listeners, local businesses, schools and organsiations then ever before got involved to host different events to raise money for the coffee morning fund, which meant we had more than 50 events taking place over the weekend.
Organiser and Founder Claire Darmody said “We are very grateful to all the people who took part by coming out on the 17th or attended and supported any of the events and also to those who hosted their own across that weekend, people’s generosity, kindness and innovation is incredibly touching and it is heartwarming to have started and be part of such a great community event”
“The East Coast fm Coffee Morning raises awareness as well as money and every penny raised on the day will go directly into these vital cancer support services, we were hoping to raise €42,000 in 2015 to bring the cumulative figure to €250k over the 7 years but the figure we actually raised this year was €60,324.38!! Just €10,000 over last years’ record total” (which was €50,384.25)
“We had raised just over €59,000 and being an Irish thing I think, wanted to round it up to €60k, a local travel jounrnalist Neil Steedman and Niall McDonnell from Red Sea Holidays donated a week for 2 to Egypt for auction and a very generous bid from Listener Anne Doyle brought us over the €60,000 mark”.
Cheques were handed over today to reps from the 5 cancer support centres and the Wicklow Hospice foundation, during an interview on the Morning Show with Declan Meehan, which today was presented by Former Rugby International Shane Byrne, who has been in attendance at one of the coffee mornings each year. The reps outlined exactly what a difference the money would make and talked about their vital services, including the volunteer to drive scheme and in some case better premises for service users. Claire also invited all the people who ran their own events across the County into the station for the presentation and hosted our own mini coffee morning where the station provided teas, coffees and cakes baked by East Coast fm staff to say thank you again.
To date the event has now raised €268,757.04.. This is a fantastic achievement for the People of County Wicklow, as uniquely there are no costs incurred by the event; all the transport, talent, time, prizes, venues, tea, coffee and refreshments are donated for free, so all the money has been passed on to the 6 local charities.
