The next talk in the Roundwood Historical Society’s 2018 Series will take place on Tuesday, March 13th at 20.00pm in the Roundwood Parish Hall.  The title of the talk is “The Famine Roads” and will be given by author and historian Charles Egan. Charles has a strong interest in the Great Irish Famine and is author of the The Killing Snows, The Exile Breed and Cold is the Dawn.   Charles has used his extensive knowledge of Mayo, the catastrophic effect of the Great Hunger in the West and family documents to back up his story telling with a strong grasp of the statistics behind the trauma of the 1840’s. Famine roads were built as a result of forced labour of the Irish peasantry who were made to work for food during the Great Famine.  These roads remain as visible marks in the Irish countryside. He will also include comparisons between Mayo and the Famine in Wicklow. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 13th March at 8pm. The entrance fee for members is €3 and for non-members is €5 – payable at the door.

The phone will be taken with him to the grave and when he gets to the ‘other side’ he will be able to communicate with the SHEDDERS down on earth and fill them in on the good life up above. “That is not going to happen”, one of the SHED wits commented,” because with the phone melting in the flames, there’ll be no signal coming from where you’re going”.  As well as the tea and cake and biscuits, there is regular banter in the SHED at the gatherings on Tuesdays between 10 and 12.
