Social Democrats Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore wants the residents of County Wicklow to get behind proposals for a regular shuttle bus service that will connect small towns and villages.
Whitmore said “Co. Wicklow has no regular bus routes linking our towns together. Currently, most regular bus routes are to Dublin. Wicklow needs a regular, high-quality bus transport service linking our towns and villages, enabling our businesses to thrive and our communities to connect.
“Over the last number of months, I have teamed up with Wicklow Tourism and Local Link (an organisation set up to provide quality community-based public transport) to develop a number of local bus routes that we hope the National Transport Authority will fund. Local stakeholders and town teams were also involved in developing the proposals.
Three initial routes have been put forward to the NTA for funding (7-day per week, hourly bus service):
– Wicklow Town to Glendalough (via Rathnew, Ashford & Roundwood)
– Greystones Dart to Roundwood (via Kilcoole & Newtownmountkennedy)
– Loop of Greystones DART, Delgany, Blacklion & Charlesland
Whitmore continued: “I believe these bus services would be game-changers for our local communities and town centres. But in order to get them funded, we need to convince the NTA that the demand is there for them.
Cllr. Whitmore has set up a petition for these bus routes that she will hand to the NTA.
“I would appreciate if residents could show their support for these routes by signing and sharing the petition,” she said.
The petition can be found here https://www.change.org/p/wicklow-needs-a-local-bus-service-linking-our-towns.
“It’s only by showing the NTA that we want these services, and that we would use them, that we will get them funded. And if we are successful with these routes, there are other routes, such as for Arklow and surrounds, that we would like to see funded also.”
