Wicklow Golf Club have been entrusted with the land at Dunbur Head and will assist with the restoration of the area.
Wicklow County Council and the Golf Club have been in talks regarding the land and how to reinstate its once famous cliff walk.
Various councillors have come out in support of the move and have described it as great news for both locals and visitors, with Cllr Gail Dunne stating that “reopening the walk will be a great opportunity for tourism. It will help open up the area for walking and the county needs this.”
While the news of its reopening was welcomed, Cllr Mary Kavanagh has said that the Friends of the Murrough have expressed some concerns.
“The start of the walk needs to be reinforced. They are also looking for reassurances that the Council will treat this as an ongoing project that will be looked at as things arise. There is no point securing the walk if we don’t stand by it and ensure it will last in the future.”
The coastal erosion in Wicklow and the restoration of the coast have been hot topics in the county since it was announced that consultancy firms had been appointed to study the problem and aid in reversing it.
