A report by The National Oversight and Audit Commission has revealed that only 1 in 5 rented accommodation units in Ireland are meeting the local authority’s standards.
Of the 16,000 properties inspected, 79% were found to be below the required standard.
100% non-compliance rates were recorded in Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, and Offaly, while failure rates were at 90% for Carlow, Galway City, Mayo, and Sligo.
The only local authorities that achieved a fail rate of below 50% were Wicklow and Cavan, with rates of 9% and 18%.
The National Oversight and Audit Commission was established as a statutory body to oversee the performance of local government.
