Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore, GE Candidate for Wicklow, has expressed her shock and disappointment at the news that Action Health Enterprises, who had been engaged by the HSE to build Primary Care Centres (PCCs) in both Greystones and Arklow have decided not to go ahead with the developments.
Cllr. Whitmore said “This is very bad news for the communities of Greystones and Arklow. People have waited years and years for these PCCs to become a reality and questions really need to be asked as to how this could be allowed to happen. This is especially concerning as we were only recently assured by the Minister for Health that these projects were progressing well, with planning permission granted for the centre in Arklow, whilst the Greystones centre was due to go for planning shortly. “
“Whilst Action Health have decided to not develop its portfolio of PCCs in Wicklow, it is my understanding that another developer could essentially take over from where they have left off. However, it is now up to the HSE and the Minister for Health to act quickly to ensure that this can happen and that alternative developers for these premises are found. Any delay to the provision of primary healthcare for Greystones and Arklow must minimised as much as possible.”
Whitmore concludes “This is further evidence that the model of delivery used by the Government to build state facilities, such as hospitals, schools and PCCs is seriously flawed. When projects such as this fail, it is the community that ultimately pays the price.”
