County Cathaoirleach Jimmy O’Shaughnessy has announced his resignation from the Labour Party this morning.
Jimmy told WicklowNews.net he felt it had been coming for some time but the recent budget was a bridge too far.
“The treatment of the pensioners is unacceptable: 41% DIRT tax on the elderly; the rise in prescriptions; the cuts in the young people’s social welfare.
“This is not what the Labour Party promised when they went to the people of the country and it is not something I want to be part of. The people who voted me in did not vote for this either.
“I will now be running in next year’s local elections as an independent. I would like to thank all the people who have supported me over the years and hope to get their support in the future.”
The Rathdrum man has been an active member of the Labour party for 35 years.
Jimmy is the third Wicklow councillor to resign from the party this year after Tom Fortune and Barry Nevin resigned in June.
