It started out as a bit of fun and a hobby but Aughrim man Derek McAlister has one of the most looked at Facebook pages in Co. Wicklow and beyond.
The amateur weather forecaster has had 38,000 Facebook views this past week with stats of over 6000 people interacting with the page, from over 62 countries worldwide. What started out as a regional page became national now international in following.
In a recent post Derek said “We are 96 hours ahead of Met Eireann and the British Met with our watch.
“However, it’s water off a ducks back if we get it wrong, so that’s why Met Eireann etc. wait until they are confident that they can issue an alert or warning, consider the amount of industry and people that depend on Met Eireann who I believe do an amazing job.”
Here is the latest on the weather from Derek:
From Monday a northerly flow will bring much colder conditions with daytime temps to struggle to 6c. Overnight lows of -5c will lead to dangerous commutes during the week with widespread heavy ground frosts.
At the moment we believe the best chance of wintry showers will be in the northern half of Ireland and higher ground elsewhere. A slight chance that eastern counties could see some wintry showers but that remains at 20% confidence.
Temperatures could increase by the weekend but there is also potential for a reload of the cold solution in the final days of Nov into early December.
We have not issued any alert as we are uncertain about some factors such as the severity of cold and further model solution to precipitation types next week. Stay tuned.
WicklowNews.net would like to wish Derek continued success. If you have not joined the other 6,143 people who like the page do so now here.
