Every Sat and Sun at 1pm and 3pm from Sat 30th Nov until Sun 22nd Dec

Have you ever tasted Hoosh?  Unlikely – this thick stew made from Pemmican (a mix of lard, dried meat and milk powder) and mixed with crushed sledging biscuits and melted snow was the staple drink of the crew of the 1914 Endurance expedition to Antarctica.

Led by Irishman Ernest Shackleton , the Christmas experience of this tremendous crew comes to life at Dún Laoghaire’s Shackleton Endurance exhibition every weekend this festive season from November 30th.

Dried meats, sledging biscuits and a bit of seal or penguin for variety were highlights of the delicacies eaten by the 28-strong crew stranded on the ice in the middle of the Antarctic – a fated journey that lasted more than 2 years.

The Shackleton Christmas Experience invites families to savour some of these delicacies as ‘The Explorer’ character brings them back in time showing them the actual photos from the expedition which commenced 99 years ago.  Don’t worry – they’ll also get to sample the rare mince pies that were put aside and saved especially for Christmas!

The Explorer will share some little-known Endurance secrets including details of the games they played including some fancy-dress theatrics of the crew as they sought to keep themselves entertained.

Children will be invited to work out how to play the traditional board games the crew enjoyed in the absence of Playstations and sing along to a sea shanty or two!

And then they’ll hear of how Mrs. Chippy and Roger, Toby, Nell and Nelson (that’s the ship’s resident cat and newborn huskies) spent their Christmas.

The Shackleton Christmas Experience launches on Saturday 30th November and runs every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm and 3pm at the Shackleton Exhibition, Ferry Terminal, Dún Laoghaire right up until Christmas.  As limited places are available, advance booking is recommended.  Cost €19 per family of four.

For adults looking for some bubbles and culture, the Shackleton Exhibition will be hosting two special pre-dining viewings of the exhibition with a glass of Prosecco, wine or Tom Crean beer on Saturday the 7th and Saturday 14th of December at 6pm.  Exhibition curator John O’Reilly will preside at these viewings and will share exclusive insights into the Shackleton story. Cost: €10 pp.  Seewww.shackletonexhibition.com for more detail.
