Wicklow school publish book of short stories

The children in Wicklow Montessori Primary School have had a collection of short stories published in a book called ‘We Are Writers’.

Children from senior infants to sixth class took part in the project which is coordinated by children’s book publisher Scholastic.

“The children are encouraged to write from a very young age,” Jane McNulty from Wicklow Montessori School said. “They progress from composing stories with the moveable alphabet to using all sorts of technology such as computers and iPads as well as more traditional methods like paper and pens.

“From a young age they explore the different writing genres such as fantasy, procedural and report writing which allows them to explore and practice different styles of writing.

“We also have a ‘Reading Buddy’ scheme where the children meet their ‘buddy’ once a week.  This encourages their reading and we are extremely fortunate to have a lovely quiet reading room with comfortable bean bags where they can relax and enjoy their books.

“By sixth class they are confident writers and readers and are always eager to write, share and discuss stories.”
