Irish rugby legend Shane Byrne was approached by figures within the Fine Gael party in Co Wicklow with a view to running in the local elections, WicklowNews.net has learned.
Byrne, who lives with his wife and children in Co Wexford, has not yet ruled out the prospect of entering local politics.
However, sources close to him say it is “unlikely” that he will run for Enda Kenny’s party.
“Shane is interested in running and has ruled nothing out, which includes running as an independent,” a source said.
Byrne has run been involved in running a successful waste collection business in Wicklow since retiring from International rugby.
