Vartry Rowers appeal for support as they prepare for gruelling challenge

Wicklow Vartry Rowers appeal for a support boat as they prepare for gruelling Celtic Challenge.

As the ultimate event quickly approaches in May, members of the Wicklow Vartry Rowing Club have stepped up their training regime to ensure maximum fitness, for the Celtic Challenge race from Arklow to Aberystwyth in Wales, which is recognised as the World’s longest true rowing race.

This year’s race will see the largest ever entry with 30 boats from both sides of the Irish Sea and France taking part in the 95-mile open sea race. The Challenge will start at Arklow on Saturday 3rd May and the Wicklow Vartry Rowing Club is entering a team in the Men’s race.

Vartry Rowing Club member George O Brien said ‘The lads are training very hard in the Crossfit gym and we go out in the boat a couple of evenings during the week to build up fitness. The crew are highly motivated and we hope to raise funds for Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat Station through sponsorship cards. ’

The Rowers are looking for the use of a Support boat to accompany them during the race; if anyone can help, they can contact George O Brien at 086311695.
