St. Patrick’s Day
The St. Patrick’s day parade saw a great AGB representation marching. Many thanks to all who helped in organising the marchers. Special thanks to Kerry Ward and Sarah O’Sullivan who started face-painting at least an hour before the parade. Many thanks to our wonderful dancers, Caoimhe, Áine, Muireann and Meadbh, who once again entertained the masses at the parade.
‘One Direction’ secret auction
The winner of the One Direction tickets, Aoise Dunning, has kindly donated the tickets back to the club, so we are holding a secret raffle. The tickets go to the highest bidder on payment of the bid. All bids are to be placed in a sealed envelope and given to your administrator. Kerry Ward and Eibhlis Forde will open all bids. In the case of a draw the names will be entered into a hat and the winner pulled out at the next executive meeting. Closing date for bids is the 31st of March 2014.
Club gear that was ordered on registration day has arrived. Please contact Kerry on 087 3287881 or email@example.com to arrange collection or for any AGB gear queries. The club shop will be open at the blue container at the Astro Turf in Pearse Park, from the 24th March.

U14 Féile boys
AGB’s U14 Féile boys played in Ballinakill, Rathdrum on Saturday the 22nd of March. Unfortunately the boys lost their games against St Nicholas and Tinahely. But these boys will be back fighting next year as most of the team will still be under 14 then. Training resumesMonday at 6.30pm as the league starts at the end of the month.
U14 Div1 girls
The U14’s girls got their Division 1 campaign off to the perfect start in Pearse Park on Saturday morning also. The girls got up to match pace quickly despite this being their first match of the season. They racked up some early scores and dominated midfield for the first half, playing with a stiff breeze. There was some good team play on show which is what we want to see and improve on this year. Inevitably Baltinglass came more into the game in the second period, playing with the wind at their backs, but the defence was up to the test, restricting their opponents to long range efforts. A good performance in general, but can still improve as the season progresses. Final Score AGB 3-12 Baltinglass 2-1 .
U14 Div3 girls
The U14 Division 3 Girls also kicked off their league campaign on Saturday. The girls played away to a very strong and experienced Barndarrig team. Unfortunately they lost, but there were a lot of positives to take from the game. The team have only been together one week and yet managed to put in a very strong performance showing great spirit, determination and lots of potential. Thanks to the U12 girls Caoimhe, Abbie, Georgia and Morrigan who played with the U14’s.
Division 1 Ladies
AGB Division 1 Ladies took on Coolkenno in the cup competition on the same day in cold conditions in Coolkenno. The game was preceded by heavy showers of hail, but thankfully it remained dry throughout the sixty minutes of play. AGB dominated the game from the start against a valiant, though under-strength Coolkenno. As a contest this one was over by half time with AGB holding a 4-9 to 0-1 lead. Coolkenno, to their credit, came back out fighting in the second half and scored the opening point. They held the Arklow side scoreless for the first ten minutes but then the Arklow ladies settled into their rhythm once again and posted another 4-7. Coolkenno continued to battle throughout and added 1-3 to their tally in the end. Strongest for Arklow were Jessie McElheron, Jessica Hurley and Stephanie Martin. Shauna Bermingham made some terrific saves in the Coolkenno goal and Nadine Nolan, Megan Doyle and Macayla Flynn were strong outfield for the home side.
The Senior Men and the Division 2 Ladies were both out on Sunday the 23rd in Arklow, but utilising different pitches. The men played in Pearse park and the ladies played in Ballymoney on a cool but sunny morning, much improved from the Senior Ladies game just a day before.
The Senior Men’s team recorded their first league win of the 2014 campaign with a hard fought one point win over Baltinglass on Sunday morning in Pearse Park. This was a cracking game of football played in great sunshine and was nip and tick throughout, with never more than a point separating the sides until AGB struck for the crucial goal 5 minutes from time to give themselves a 4 point cushion. Baltinglass went all out to rescue the game but strong defending by the AGB backline gave AGB the win by the narrowest of margins. In a good team performance, Mick Carey stood out thanks to three fantastic saves in the first half which laid the platform for the victory. Final score AGB 1-11 to Baltinglass 0-13.
Scorers as follows: Cormac Hyland 0-4, Donal O’Keeffe 0-3, Stephen Hurley and Philip Healy 0-2 each, Dara Mc Bride 1-0. Best for Arklow on the day were Michael Carey, Alan McBride, Neil O’Reilly, Stephen Hurley, Donal O’Keeffe and Cormac Hyland.
Division 2 Ladies
The Division 2 Ladies challenged Carnew in the Cup competition. This was a game of goals. AGB were against a slight wind in the first half but this didn’t hamper any effort on their goal chances. Katie Furlong got the ball rolling and started off a succession of goals. Carnew put pressure on the AGB backs but found it hard to get past a tight defence. After working the ball down to the Arklow half back line, Carnew were inevitably met by the hardworking Kayleigh Earls, Aoife O’Reilly or Ger Galvin. A free at the end of the first half gave Carnew their first score. The second half saw the recently returned Michelle Kinsella and Naomi Kilroy take up their positions on the field. Their leave of absence didn’t affect their football skills, as they asserted their influence on the game. Final score AGB 7-8 to Carnew 1-1. Best on the day for Arklow were: Kayleigh Carter, Ger Galvin, Kayleigh Earls, Aoife O’Reilly and Roisin O’Reilly. Scorers: Katie furlong (1-0), Lisa Keegan (1-0), Doireann O’Reilly(2-2), Aoife Murphy (1-0), Sarah Kendrick (2-0), Molly Byrne (0-4), Megan Boyle (0-1), Ellie Jones (0-1).
