The Blessington Bookstore and Coffee Shop has been named independent bookshop of the year for 2014.
The store was named as one of seven regional winners in the UK Booksellers Awards.
The Blessington Bookshop, a shop-cum-café which judges said had “an exciting book and non-book range matched by online and social media engagement and digital experimentation.”
The store is known for its extensive selection of children’s books and gifts, their recommended reads (chosen by their enthusiastic panel of their local readers), wool, homemade cakes, gluten free products, breakfast and lunch menus.
“We are delighted and honoured to be flying the flag for Irish Independent Bookshops. As one of five Irish Finalists and it is a wonderful recognition of our passion and hard work, the dedication of the bookstore staff and our wonderful customers”, commented Janet Hawkins, Proprietor.
The overall winner of the Independent Bookshop of the Year 2014 will be revealed at The Bookseller Industry Awards in London on May 12. The winner will be awarded £5,000 to spend on their shop.
Nigel Roby, The Bookseller publisher and CEO, praised the “extraordinarily high” quality of the 2014 entries. He said: “Our judges had some extremely tough decisions to get down to this number of shortlistees. All those who sent entries in show that the book trade is bursting with innovation, passion and entrepreneurial spirit.”
