Shane Byrne will not run for Fine Gael in the local elections this year.
The former Ireland international was approached by the party last week and has been mulling over his decision since then.
According to the Irish Independent, Byrne held talks with party officials over the weekend but decided against running for Enda Kenny’s party.
Byrne, who lives with his wife and children in Co Wexford, has not yet ruled out the prospect of entering local politics and is known to have connections with Fianna Fail.
