The Arklow Coastal Rowing Club All Ireland Championship Medal Winning Team

It’s a rare occasion that a club from Arklow can boast such a successful haul of medals at any competition but that’s exactly what the members of the Arklow Coastal Rowing Club have done at the 2013 All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships.

The championships were held in Carnlough, Co Antrim, with a total of 22 medals including 6 Gold, 10 Silver and 6 Bronze going to the Arklow club.

Although the racing season is over it does not mean the end of training as some of the members are currently involved in exhaustive preparations for this year’s ‘Celtic Challenge’.

Recently the Arklow Coastal Rowing Club hosted the Celtic Challenge Committee in preparation for this year’s race. Of the 30 teams registered for the race there are 6 teams representing clubs from Ireland; Ferry Carrig, Courtown, Mount Charles, Foyle, St Michaels and of course Arklow.

The Challenge involves teams racing from Arklow to Aberystwyth in Wales and a race which the club have won in 2002 and following a gruelling 25 hours the Arklow Ladies team prevailed in 2012. This year the Challenge starts on the 3rd May.

Those of you who would like to try coastal rowing the club meet for training every Sunday morning at 9.30 and is situated at the junction of South Quay and Dock Road, beside the Seafarer’s Memorial Garden.
