Cllr Gráinne Mc Loughlin noted the latest research into who is paid what at council level and was not surprised to see that the lowest paid councillors were both of the female Fine Gael County Councillors, herself and Cllr Irene Winters.
Whilst accepting that the figures listed do not explain some of the disparities associated with expenses, Cllr. Mc Loughlin did state that at the end of the day both herself and Irene only claimed what is necessary.
“I have attended a few conferences over the year – only those that I thought would genuinely benefit my work in Wicklow and indeed, refused to accept that travelling to Belfast for a conference last year was within the remit of ‘foreign travel’ and insisted on charging the Irish subsistence rate. With this job, there are expenses incurred and I do think that the media are wrong to lump salary (16k), expenses etc all into one total and thus entice huge anger from the public. At the same token, I think all expenses should be receipted and accounted for”, Grainne went on to say.
This has to be a win win situation for both of their constituents in Wicklow. The two women are costing the taxpayer the least amount of money and yet are well respected for amount of work they put into their respective constituencies.
