Gardai appeal for witnesses after off-duty officer has car set on fire

Gardai in Wicklow are appealing for witnesses after a car belonging to an off-duty garda was set on fire in Ashford on Monday night.

The incident occurred while the guard was playing soccer at Woodside, Ballinalea Park.  Some of the players noticed the car on fire and pushed it out of the way so the fire wouldn’t spread to other cars parked in the area.

Extensive damage was caused to the car, which was parked beside the changing rooms at the pitch, which is home to Ashford Rovers.

Gardai have yet to establish whether the car was targeted because it belonged to an off-duty garda, and anyone with information is asked to contact Wicklow Garda Station on (0404) 60140.
