Gareth Farrell of East Coast FM reports a Wicklow man described as the “oldest drugs mule to come before the courts” has been jailed for three years for drug possession in April 2012.
65 year old Edward Rooney of Ballinacorribeg in Roundwood, and 55 year old Des Ryan of Belfield Springs in Enniscorthy in Wexford, originally received suspended 10 year sentences for possession of 1 point 2 million euro in drugs.
The Court of Appeal last month found their sentences too lenient, after a successful appeal from the Director of Public Prosecutions. Mr Justice Sean Ryan said yesterday that the appropriate sentence was five years imprisonment.
However, because of new testimonials, the court reduced their sentences to three years. The men were arrested after a Garda surveillance operation in the car park of a pub in Finglas.
A hold all bag containing nine plastic bags with packages of heroin worth 1.26 million euro, and one bag of cocaine worth just under 15 thousand euro was recovered.
