Dunlavin notes February 9

Friedreich’s Ataxia Christmas card fundraiser pulls in more money for Research
Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (www.faraIreland.ie ),to date, have raised over €1,500. While sales were a little down on previous years, this still represents a significant amount of money to the charity. We were fortunate to have a coffee morning fundraiser just before Christmas which raised over €1,000 as well.

This Christmas card fundraiser has been very important to the charity since its inception. After allowing for the cost of printing & packaging a total of €4.60 from the sale of each pack goes directly to the charity. The cards have also made the general public more aware of the condition and as a result people have befriended “ataxians” in this area as well as raising much needed money for research.

The money raised by FARA Ireland will be used to fund research into this progressive and debilitating condition which to date has no treatment or cure. In 2014, we were able to send €37,000 to international research projects from money raised in this West Wicklow and Kildare and West Cork. The generosity of all far exceeded our expectations for the year. It certainly sets a high target for our organisation to reach in the future. All in FARA Ireland are most grateful to you for your continued support.

There is an international conference on Friedreich’s Ataxia research in London in March 2015 and hope to hear the results of the projects we have part sponsored to date.
