Bebhinn Flood from Greystones and her business, The Design House, which is based in Dawson Street, Dublin, are in the running for the €100,000 prize package on offer to the winner of the 2015 David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards!
Housed over five floors in a beautiful Georgian building, Bebhinn opened The Design House in October 2013 with the aim of bringing designers, craftspeople and artists together under one roof and to offer customers a wide array of high quality design and retail products and services. Bebhinn signed the lease in July 2013 – on the same day that she went into labour with baby, Elliott! She then oversaw extensive repairs and fit-out until the opening a few months later.
The overall winner and winner in each of the Arts, Business and Social categories will be announced at a ceremony in the offices of Mason, Hayes & Curran on Tuesday 17th February 2015 by Dr. Chris Horn, chair of the panel of judges and guest speaker, Emma Manley, Owner and Creative Director @ Manley. The overall winner will win a prize package worth over €100,000 – comprising of €10k in cash and mentoring and consultancy services from a range of companies. Each category winner receives €1,000 in cash. www.davidmanleyawards.ie
Offering cutting edge fashion, jewellery, bridal, vintage and a variety of crafts, The Design House is now home to over 40 Irish designers, 60 craft design and 16 artists. For customers, there are three floors of retail, a Gallery, cafe, a make-up department, a bespoke service, classes in fashion, millinery, jewellery and tours. For the designers and crafts people, there are two floors featuring shared studio space and professional fashion workrooms with an in-house seamstress.
Bebhinn Flood says, “I wanted to give both established and up-and-coming designers a platform to work, sell and showcase their products and I also saw a real niche in the market for offering customers a high quality exclusive bespoke fashion service at an affordable price. The fact we have retail with studio spaces and a sewing room in the one building is vastly different to any other collective out there.”
Last year, The Design House organised and hosted a fashion show in Royal Hibernian Way to close the Dublin Fashion Festival.
Short term, Bebhinn will develop an online retail presence and longer term, she plans to turn the business into a successful franchise with branches nationwide, with expansion into Europe and the US as her ultimate goal.
