Fine Gael TD for Wicklow and Minister of State, Simon Harris TD has today (Thursday, 5th February) announced that a new primary school is to be established in Greystones in September 2015.

Minister Harris received the news from Minister for Education & Skills, Jan O’Sullivan TD that the new primary school is to be established to meet the demands of the growing population in Greystones, a matter which Minister Harris drew to the attention of the Minister and the Department on several occasions in recent years.

The specific site for the school will be confirmed shortly and Minister Harris has outlined that a patronage determination process for the new school will be conducted shortly.

Speaking on today’s announcement Minister Harris stated: “I am absolutely thrilled that Greystones will have a new primary school established in September 2015.

“I hope and expect that this new school will be delivered in Charlesland, as I know that lands are zoned in the area for the provision of a school.

“For some time now, I have been campaigning for the delivery of a new school in Greystones, and I have made this one of my top priorities. I have also been working alongside local Fine Gael Greystones Cllrs Derek Mitchell and Gráinne McLoughlin. Indeed, just this week I wrote to residents in the Charlesland area, informing them of the status of this development. I also reassured residents that I was keeping in close contact with the Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan TD on the delivery of this vital infrastructure for our community.

“I am delighted that this Government has delivered a school for the families who, year after year, have contacted my office as they struggle to find a school place for their children.

“Our current local primary schools are doing a tremendous job but demographics clearly showed an additional primary school was required.

“Today is a great day for parents, young children and the community of Greystones, and I look forward to the delivery of Greystones’ newest primary school,” concluded Minister Harris.
