7th East Coast FM’s Wicklow Wide Coffee Morning in aid of Wicklow Cancer Support Services and Wicklow Hospice Foundation takes place on Friday 17th April 10am-midday

Over the last six years, East Coast fm listeners have managed to raise over €208,000 in aid of the 5 Cancer Support Centres in County Wicklow and the Wicklow Hospice Foundation, last year the station with the help of all their listeners raised over €50,000 during the two hours of the coffee mornings and with additional fundraisers over the weekend, including multiple bag packs, bric a brac sales, non-uniform days, smaller coffee mornings in listeners homes and business and a monster table quiz.

This years’ county wide coffee morning takes place on Friday 17th April in conjunction with East Coast FM’s Morning Show. Coffee mornings will take place simultaneously in eleven different main venues around the county between 10am and 12pm. As always, Declan will link-up live to each venue a couple of times throughout the Morning Show as well as interviewing some celebrities that will be showing their support to the event. East Coast fm is asking the people of Wicklow to again come out and support the coffee morning by dropping in to one of our 11 venues, having a tea or coffee and making a donation while enjoying entertainment and the chance of winning a prize!!

The venues will all have entertainment and appearances from well known faces; Eleanor McEvoy, Brian Kennedy, Mary Byrne, Amanda Brunker and Shane Byrne. They will also be joined by fantastic singers Kim Hayden, Luan Parle, Irelands Eurovsion 2015 contestant Molly Sterling, and Magicians Jack Wise, Colm Dawson and Joe Daly and many more on the day with appearances and performances this year.

The unique aspect of the coffee morning events is that every penny donated goes to the charities, all of the celebrities, sound equipment, refreshments, prizes, posters, transport, tea, coffee, raffle tickets, reporters and venues are all donated or donate time for free so the events incur no costs – this is a very unique aspect to the event. Prizes, (as seen in the picture donated by Blackcastle drinks, a new Wicklow company) not only increase tickets sales and attendance at the event but also hopefully promote these local brands and businesses. Hotel breaks, vouchers for golf, spa treatments and restaurants, hampers and concert tickets will be raffled as prizes at each of the main venues.

The Coffee Morning is to raise and awareness money for all of the cancer support centres/services in County Wicklow and the Wicklow Hospice Foundation. These organisations do fantastic work and face a constant lack of funding. They are an invaluable service for the county and the aim is use East Coast FM as a vehicle to get the people of Wicklow together to help raise awareness and plenty of money while having a good time.

The main coffee mornings will take place in;

• The Martello, Bray,
• The Beach House, Greystones,
• River Bank Café and Bistro Arklow Bridgewater Centre, Arklow
• Kavanaghs, Vartry House, Roundwood.
• The Grand Hotel Wicklow Town,
• The West Wicklow House, Blessington
• Avondale Sports Shop, Rathdrum
• The Food Café, Fishers, Newtownmountkennedy
• Avoca, Mount Usher, Ashford
• The Kingfisher Kitchen, Enniskerry
• Lawless’s Hotel, Aughrim

Organiser Claire Darmody says

“To make this event a bigger success and to raise plenty more cash for the Wicklow cancer support services and the Wicklow Hospice Foundation we also need to get as many people as we can who can’t make it to the venues, also raising money and taking part on the day, so we appealed to our listeners.

For the last two years and this one; listeners, local businesses and organisations have got in touch to run their own event or coffee morning, which is important to grow the event. Lots of people who can’t make the major venues are kindly running their own fundraiser to help the east coast fm Wicklow wide coffee morning fund right across the weekend of April 17th -19th, people are getting quite innovative, for example; The Fish man in Wicklow town is feeding people for free on South Quay in Wicklow town on Saturday 18th April and accepting donations in return and Glenmalure Golf club are opening their golf course to golfers for free along with refreshments and a raffle in return for donations on April 17th.

Some local resource centres, a famers market, private homes, coffee shops, beauticians and nursing homes will again hold mini coffee mornings with raffles and provide refreshments for small donations. Wicklow County Council will hold a raffle for the third year running weeks before the coffee morning and several schools across the County are hosting non-uniform days or extended coffee morning breaks for the fund.

These are just examples of some of the outstanding generosity and participation being shown by the people of Wicklow. Other events are held for us around the County on the Saturday and we have organised bag packs for the fund in Four Tescos around the County and a Dunnes Stores in Newtown. We also have a new venue for our Monster Table Quiz on April 19th, the Strand Hotel, Bray, all the East Coast fm staff always take part in that and is super fun, is on from 7.30pm and we sell tables of 4 for €40 and have refreshments and lots of raffle prizes.”

The event is currently being promoted across the station with testimonials from centre service users; as always they are willing to share sensitive personal stories for the good of the cause and event and really help with the turnout.

The most important message is to please take part in at least one of the 50 events being run across the County over the weekend of April 17-19th. To help raise money for the 5 Cancer Support Centres in County Wicklow and Wicklow Hospice Foundation. If people have any queries or want to get involved please call Claire on 01 27 24 700 or email her on coffee@eastcoast.fm and for full list of events please see www.eastcoast.fm/coffee
