Seventy-four additional units of accommodation are to be provided by Wicklow County Council as a result of new social housing funding announced by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
Under the latest scheme, Wicklow County Council will acquire 32 units in an apartment complex in Newtownmountkennedy.
A further 42 units will be constructed on the site known locally as Murphy’s Land, Kilbride, Bray. Work will commence shortly on preparing for construction of the scheme.
Commenting on to-day’s funding news, the Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr John Ryan, and Cllr John Snell, chair of the Housing Strategic Policy Committee of Wicklow County Council, warmly welcomed the announcement from the Department and said it was very good news for County Wicklow.
A total of 3,619 applicants are currently on Wicklow County Council’s Housing List. Demand for social housing is high throughout Wicklow with a particularly acute situation in the north of the county.
Wicklow County Council has, subject to funding, prioritised a total of 12 construction schemes for roll-out throughout the county over the coming years. This is in line with the requirements of the Departments’ Social Housing Strategy 2020.
